Luang Prabang – Pakbeng – Huay Xai

A popular and trouble-free way of traveling from Laos to Thailand is to enter Thailand at Huau Xai, after travelling by slow boat up the Mekong River from Luang Prabang. The Mekong River is the border here and crossing from the border town of Huay Xai (Laos) to Chiangkong (Thailand) is easy, due to well-established immigration facilities and a bridge over the river. We should arrive in Huay Xai in time for you to make your way through immigration and across the border into Thailand. Or you can spend some time in beautiful Huay Xai (recommended).

The journey will take two days, with a one-night stop over in the pretty, river-side village of Pakbeng. We will arrive in Pakbeng in the afternoon, allowing you plenty of time to explore this small village. We depart again the next day for Huay Xai.

From the river you are surrounded by jungle-covered hills and mountains. Villages make their space on the rivers edge and there are boats of all shapes and sizes plying their way up and down the river. The river is a very important thoroughfare for the Lao people.

There is plenty to see while you slowly make your way down the river, or you can just relax with a book or sleep.
